Good preparation for the Champions League in Serie A
The three Italian sides facing up to English opposition in the Champions League midweek had mostly good results this weekend, with both Juventus – who will be trying to overturn a one goal deficit against Chelsea at the Stadio Olimpico on Tuesday – and Internazionale – taking on Man United at Old Trafford on Wednesday – taking all three points.
The Bianconeri won the Turin derby 1-0 in yesterday's televised late kick off, with Italy defender Giorgio Chiellini heading home the winner with only nine minutes left. But it wasn't enough to close the gap on league leaders Inter, who won 2-0 away at Genoa thanks to goals from Zlatan Ibrahomivic and Mario Balotelli. The Nerazzuri are still seven points clear at the top of Serie A.
Inter's win puts a slight dent in Genoa's charge for the fourth Champions League spot currently held by Fiorentina, who are at home to mid-table Palermo today. They are one point behind the Viola on 45 points, as are Roma, who missed the chance to take the fourth spot by drawing at home to Udinese. It wasn't the best preparation for their clash with Arsenal at the Stadio Olimpico on Wednesday, but it could have been worse; substitute Mirko Vucinic scored a much-needed equaliser for the injury ravaged Giallorosso an hour in, only seven minutes after they conceded the opener after a shocking error by goalkeeper Doni. They will be hoping for much better in the week, where they are looking to peg back the north London side's one goal lead from the first leg.
