Golfing legend Gary Player once said: the more I practise, the luckier I get. He was being ironic, of course, after a pundit suggested he was a lucky golfer. Yet his maxim seems, without irony, to apply to the England cricket team.
We had a pretty poor day bowling in the first Test in New Zealand yesterday. Yet we got lucky and held onto a few good catches – making the day ours when, rightfully, it should have been the Kiwis’ honours.
What’s the secret? We’ve been practising like crazy at our fielding skills. Seems strange, doesn’t it, to talk about professional sportspeople doing well ‘cos they practise? Especially cricketers. Seems practising really does pay off.
