Glasson Hotel and Golf Club

A few miles from the Westmeath town of Athlone, by the shores of the splendid Lough Ree, the family-run four star Glasson Country House Hotel and Golf Club has built up a reputation as one of the most picturesque golf courses in Ireland, supplemented by the kind of luxury hospitality that golfers and their entourage expect. After all, what is a golfing holiday without cocktails and a spa treatment these days?

But for those who value the thrill of the challenge above all else, the course offers championship level game. Designed by former Ryder Cup star, Christy O’Connor Jnr., since opening in 1993, the Glasson golf club course has been the location of a number of regional and international championship finals, including the European Challenge Tour in August 2007 and 2008. It is ranked among the top 30 courses in Ireland by Golf Digest.

The first hole - 373 yards into the prevailing wind - is a short walk from the pro shop at Glasson Hotel. The rolling course is dotted with woodland and water and free from plots and unsightly buildings. Of the water holes, the 15th offers the most thrilling task - a par-3 across water to a peninsula green. At 383 yards the 18th heads uphill towards a putting green surrounded by eight bunkers.

Membership to Glasson golf club starts from €1,250 and includes seven-day membership, preferential tee times and special hotel rates, as well as eligibility to play in club competitions. For non members, the resort is currently offering a Golfers Escape, 1 or 2 night break, from €135 per person. For more details visit glassongolfhotel.ie
