Gerrard ruled out of Lyon clash

Liverpool's bad week got even worse with the news that their captain and talisman Steven Gerrard will miss Wednesday's crucial Champions League clash against Lyon.

Gerrard has played just 28 minutes of the Reds' last three games and will not travel with to Lyon for the must win game due to a groin injury. On a brighter note for Rafa Benitez, Fernando Torres could feature in the match despite also suffering with a groin problem.

"We are trying to manage [him] because he was close to having an operation. We have to take Fernando to Lyon because we don't have too many options," the under fire Liverpool manager told reporters.

Italian midfielder Alberto Aquilani will also travel with the first team squad but is reported to be suffering from a virus which ruled him out of Saturday's defeat to Fulham.

Defenders Daniel Agger, Glen Johnson and striker David Ngog will also be available for selection as Liverpool look to salvage their season.
