Gerrard Houllier to be appointed Aston Villa manager

Gerrard Houllier will be appointed manager of Aston Villa before the end of the week according to reports on the back pages this morning.

The former Liverpool boss is currently the national technical director of French football but will meet with Football Federation president Fernando Duchaussoy to discuss leaving the post and taking over at Villa Park.

‘I will meet Wednesday to take stock of the situation with him [Houllier], I'll ask him,’ Duchaussoy told reporters. ‘I would like to continue working with him.’

While Houllier had been linked with the director of football position at Villa, it now appears that he will make a return to Premier League management after a six-year absence.

The 63-year-old managed Liverpool between 1998 and 2004 winning the UEFA Cup, FA Cup and League Cup in 2001.

Villa’s caretaker manager Kevin McDonald is expected to stay on as first-team coach.
