Germany beat Austria to book quarter-final spot
Germany booked a quarter-final showdown with Portugal with a 1-0 over near neighbours Austria at Euro 2008 last night. Michael Ballack hit an unstoppable free-kick past Jurgen Macho in the second half which was enough to see Germany qualify for their first European Championship quarter-final since Euro '96.
But Germany were far from convincing against a stubborn and hardworking Austrian side. The co-hosts pressed Germany down the flanks through Garics and were dogged in defence and in midfield. The result sees Austria eliminated but they can be proud of their performance in the competition where they were punching far above their weight.
Elsewhere in Group B Croatia beat Poland 1-0 thanks to Ivan Klasnic smart finish after 52 minutes. Slaven Bilic's side had already booked a quarter-final spot so the Croatia manager chose to rest a number of key players. But even Croatia's reserves were too strong for a Poland side that has again failed to perform in a major tournament.
