Tyson Gay has beaten Usain Bolt in the 100m at the Diamond League meeting in Stockholm, in what was only Bolt’s second defeat at that distance.
Gay finished in 9.84 seconds to beat the newly fit Bolt, who has been struggling with an Achilles tendon injury for much of the season, who was lagging 0.13 seconds behind the American. However, despite the win, which will raise eyebrows across athletics, Gay doesn’t feel it proves anything.
‘It feels great to beat Usain but deep down inside I know he is not 100%,’ said Gay. ‘I look forward to beating him when he is 100%. Usain knows what his limitations are. His goal this year was to go undefeated, not set world records. He has plenty left in the tank.
‘It was very important to beat someone like that for the fans and the sport. My body worked well today, I was excited and motivated.’
