Gareth Barry named England captain against Ghana

Gareth Barry has been named England captain for tonight’s friendly match against Ghana. Fabio Capello decided to hand the Manchester City midfielder the armband after John Terry was allowed to return to Chelsea.

‘He’s a good player, a good captain,’ Capello said of Barry. ‘He’s also the player with the most England caps.’

The Italian has made seven changes from the team which beat Wales 2-0 in the Euro 2012 qualifier in the Millennium Stadium at Cardiff with Phil Jagielka, Leighton Baines and Andy Carroll set to start tomorrow night at Wembley.

Although the England team which will lineout against Ghana will be largely a second string XI, Fabio Capello believes that fans should not feel short changed.

‘I respect the fans. It will be interesting for the fans to see some players they know very well. The players who will play will be really good players and I hope we can see the spirit on the pitch like in the first 30 minutes against Wales.’
