Gareth Barry joins Manchester City for £12m

Manchester City have completed the shock signing of Aston Villa captain Gareth Barry after the Birmingham club accepted a bid of £12m for the England midfielder.

According to the Guardian, Barry carried out a medical at the City of Manchester Stadium earlier this afternoon before putting pen to paper on a deal said to be worth somewhere in the region of £100,000 per week.

The news will come as a hammer blow to Liverpool manager Rafa Benitez who is reported to have made the versatile 28-year-old his number one transfer target this summer. Despite claiming that playing Champions League football was his priority at this stage in his career, Barry appears to have been swayed by the huge salary on offer.

While Villa fans will be bitterly disappointed to see the England midfielder leave, it is hard to begrudge a player who has been the club's outstanding performer for over 12 years. Moreover, Barry could have walked away on a Bosman next summer, instead Martin O'Neill will now have £12m to spend on new players.
