Fulham beat Manchester City 3-1 this afternoon to heap the pressure on under fire manager mark Hughes. The former United legend dropped British record signing Robinho to the bench and the decision backfired dramatically.
Hughes claimed afterwards that he wanted to give the Brazilian playmaker a rest despite the absence of Craig Bellamy and Shaun Wright Phillips through injury. The decision looked to have paid off when Stephen Ireland again scored a brilliant early goal to give his City the lead.
The midfielder criticised his team-mates following the midweek defeat to Hamburg in the UEFA Cup and would have had much to grumble about after today's performance. City were disjointed, unable to maintain possession gave and prone to errors at the back.
Fulham took full advantage of City's lapses equalising through Clint Dempsey on 50 minutes before taking the lead through former Citizen Dickson Etuhu. Dempsey made it 3-1 just before the end sparking an angry response from the City faithful who began chanting "We want Robinho" and "You don't know what you're doing" in the direction of Hughes.
