Football Stadiums of Europe: The Biggest and Best

With the football season in full swing we take a look at some of the biggest and best football stadiums in Europe.

Camp Nou

The largest stadium in Europe is Camp Nou. It is situated in Barcelona, Spain and home to the famous FC Barcelona team since 1957. It has a staggering capacity of almost 100,000 and has hosted a range of international football matches as well as two UEFA League Championship Final matches. The stadium was also the venue of the 1992 Olympic football competition. Worldwide it is ranked 13th largest.


Wembley Stadium, home of the English national football team, is the second largest in Europe with a capacity of 90,000. Wembley is situated in the Borough of Brent in London. The current stadium, also known as New Wembley was built after the old stadium, famous for its twin towers, was demolished in 2003. The stadium generally holds significant matches such as the FA Cup final and England Internationals. In addition to football Wembley tickets can be bought for numerous concerts including Take That and Live Earth as well as other sporting events including other forms of football such as Rugby and American football.

Estadio Santiago Bernabeu

The Estadio Santiago Bernabeu is the third largest stadium in Europe and is also situated in Spain. It is home to world famous football team Real Madrid. The stadium has a capacity of nearly 86,000. It is considered one of the most prestigious stadiums in the world and has played host to numerous Eurpoean Cup Finals as well as the UEFA Championship Final in 2010.

Signal Iduna Park

Signal Iduna Park is the official name of the stadium in Dortmund in Germany which is home to Borussia Dortmund football team. It was originally known as Westfalenstadion until a sponsorship deal with Signal Iduna Insurance company renamed it. The stadium has a capacity of almost 81,000 however it is reknown for its atmosphere, winning it a Best Stadium award from The Times.

Stadio Giuseppe Meazza

The Stadio Giuseppe Meazza, more commonly referred to as the San Siro is situated in Milan, Italy. It is home to both A.C Milan and F.C Internazionale Milano. It has a capacity of just over 80,000. The stadium plays host to music concerts and has had the likes of top billing artists Michael Jackson, Madonna, U2 and Bon Jovi play there. Other sports such as Rugby and Boxing have been played there.
