Football pays tribute to Sir Bobby Robson

Some of the heavy weights of English football paid tribute to the late Sir Bobby Robson yesterday. The service at Durham Cathedral was attended by over 1,000 guests including Sir Alex Ferguson, Bobby Charlton and Fabio Capello.

Former England managers Steve McClaren, Sven-Goran Eriksson, Graham Taylor, Howard Wilkinson and Peter Taylor were also in attendance along with Paul Gascoigne and Gary Lineker - two of the stars of Italia 90.

Match of the Day presenter Lineker read a fitting eulogy to Robson: 'He was everything that was good about the game. He loved the game and the game loved him. He was a lion of a man. No, make that 'three lions'. Sir Bobby Robson, we will miss you but we will never, ever forget you.'

Manchester United manager Sir Alex Ferguson continued the tributes to Robson underlining his achievements at Newcastle United before expressing his anger that Sir Bobby had been forced to leave the job he loved so much.

'A man like that could have gone on and on,' he said. 'It has been one of the privileges of my life to have met him and to have been enthused by him. He influenced me then and he's always influenced me.'
