Flavio Briatore quits Renault

Flavio Briatore and Pat Symonds have resigned from Renault following allegations that they conspired with the team's former driver Nelson Piquet Junior to cause a crash during last year's Singapore Grand Prix.

Briatore and Symonds have both strenuously denied the charges, but their decision to commit hara-kiri suggests that the allegations may have an element of truth. Despite the high profile resignation of the team's managing director and executive director of engineering respectively Renault could still face sanctions from the World Motor Sport Council.

The FIA ruled that Renault had conspired "with its driver, Nelson Piquet Jnr, to cause a deliberate crash at the 2008 Singapore Grand Prix with the aim of causing the deployment of the safety car to the advantage of its other driver, Fernando Alonso".

Alonso went on to win the race in Formula One's first ever night race at a moment when Renault were considering walking away from the sport. The FIA has the power to throw the French team out of the sport but the sanctions are not expected to be that harsh.
