Firing on all cylinders

Ronnie O’Sullivan cruised past Matthew Stevens 9-3 to put himself in the second round of this year’s UK Championship, which we all must remember is being sponsored by Pukka Pies. However, despite the heavy scoreline and the eventual ease of the victory, The Rocket didn’t have it all his own way.

Stevens was 2-0 up after two frames and was looking in good enough form to take his match with the Londoner down to the wire, especially after he levelled the scores at 3-3 with an impressive 101 break. However, O’Sullivan fired off breaks of 74 and 78 to finish the afternoon session two frames up and after that Stevens didn’t get a look in. O’Sullivan even had time to attempt a 147, but a careless red at 64 with the balls in great positions cost him a possible £30,000.

Elsewhere 2005 UK Champion Ding Junhui beat Mike Dunn 9-5 after being 5-3 down at the end of the first session, and world number eight Marco Fu lost 9-3 to Peter Lines, who is ranked a relatively lowly 64th.
