Ferdinand injury blow for Manchester United

Rio Ferdinand hobbled off during Manchester United's 2-2 draw with Middlesbrough yesterday. The draw saw United's lead at the top of the table cut to 3 points with Chelsea beating Manchester City 2-0 on Saturday.

With Nemanja Vidic already out injured Alex Ferguson is facing a defensive crisis ahead of Wednesday's visit of Roma in the Champions League and then Arsenal, Blackburn and Chelsea in the Premiership run-in. The alternative to the rock solid Vidic and Ferdinand at the back are O Shea and Brown, a pairing that doesn't instill too much confidence.

Last week Sportscene described Boro's two goal hero against United Afonso Alves as "overpriced and overhyped". While two goals don't make a great striker, there is a lot of egg being cleaned off certain faces this morning. The Brazilian finished both goals with aplomb.

After the weekend's results and Ferdinand's injury the delicious irony of life and the Premier League could see Chelsea fans' favourite Avram Grant actually win the title for the Blues.
