Fabregas fires Arsenal top of the Premier League

Arsenal moved top of the Premier League with a 2-0 win over London rivals West Ham at The Emirates this afternoon despite playing most of the game with 10 men.

When Denilson put The Gunners in front on five minutes it looked as if the floodgates were about to open. However, Thomas Vermaelen picked up a red card for a reckless challenge on Guillermo Franco inside the penalty area just before the break.

Alessandro Diamanti saw his resulting spot-kick saved by Manuel Almunia and Arsenal showed a maturity and an ability to grind out a result that has arguably been lacking in previous seasons.

Cesc Fabregas made sure of the points with a late penalty after Matthew Upson had handled the ball in the area.

'We’ve improved in our maturity and when we need to accelerate we can do it,' Arsene Wenger said after the game. 'We are all conscious that we have won nothing yet but the hunger is there, the talent is there and the nerve is there.'
