FA Cup Third Round Draw: Arsenal v Spurs is Top Tie
Arsenal were given a great tie for the third round of the FA Cup as they find themselves facing Tottenham on the weekend of 4th and 5th January. The north London side’s most recent championship success was in the FA Cup in 2005, but they face a tough Tottenham side this time out so their chances of a repeat are slim.
Both Tottenham and Arsenal have great records in the competition. Arsenal have taken the cup home 10 times and Spurs have lifted it on 8 occasions. The only team to have more success in the competition is Manchester United who have 11 FA Cup successes, the last of which was 10 seasons ago. The team from the red side of Manchester have also been drawn Premier League opponents as they are playing at home to Swansea.
Cup holder Wigan begin their defence against MK Dons at home. The holders haven’t had a lot of luck in cup competitions this season. Losing to Manchester United in the Community Shield probably wasn’t too much of a surprise but they’ve also been underwhelming in Europe. They still have a hope of qualifying for the knockout stages of the UEFA Europa League but they’ll need to win their final Group D match to do so.
Last year’s losing finalists Manchester City are away to Blackburn in the third-round of the Cup, which shouldn’t be too difficult for Manuel Pellegrini’s men, and Liverpool face Oldham, the side that knocked them out last season. Last year’s fourth round clash saw Oldham win 3-2, a result that Brendan Rodger’s side now have chance to rectify. Other all-Premier League matches include Newcastle at home to Cardiff, Crystal Palace against West Brom and Norwich facing Fulham.
