Everton were dumped out of the Uefa Cup last night by Belgian side Standard Liege. David Moyes’ team were beaten 2-1 on the night, losing the tie 4-3 on aggregate.
Axel Witsel opened the scoring for Standard Liege before Milan Jovanovic doubled their lead from the penalty-spot in the second half. Phil Jagielka had pulled one back for Everton, but it was a false dawn as the Premier League side proved toothless in attack and uninspired in midfield.
The result looks to have effectively ended Everton’s season; the Toffees are out of Europe as well as the Carling Cup and are struggling in the Premier League, but they should have enough to avoid relegation.
