Europa league round-up

Last night wasn’t a great night for British clubs in the Europa League, with both Liverpool and Manchester City going down to defeats away from home, and Rangers holding PSV Eindhoven to a draw.

City went down 2-0 at Dynamo Kiev, while Liverpool lost 1-0 at Sporting Braga and Rangers drew 0-0 with the Dutchmen. All three are now at serious risk of being knocked out of the competition, with City now needing to win by three goals in the return leg if they want to make it to the quarter finals. City boss Roberto Mancini was left rueing the defensive blunders that let in Andriy Shevchenko and Oleh Gusev to score, which cost them a game they dominated.

‘We need to pay attention in the defensive phase because they were two stupid goals,’ he said. ‘We played a good game but made two big mistakes for the two goals. Kiev are a good team. The right result might have been 2-1. We had control of the game. They played counter-attack. I'm frustrated because we conceded two goals.

‘When you play in the Europa League, you can't concede goals like this. We didn't mark well for the first goal, the second goal the same. We were four or five metres from the opponent. When you mark in the box you should be near.’
