Europa League pain for Scotland

Scottish football was reeling last night after all three of their representatives were knocked out of European football. It's the first time since European competition began in 1955 that that no Scottish team has been in Europe on 1 September, and another grim reminder of how far the game there has fallen.

Hearts drew 0-0 at Tottenham, which would have been fine had they not been hammered 5-0 at home last week, while the Old Firm suffered worse humiliation: Celtic were walloped 3-1 at FC Sion, while Rangers couldn't beat lowly NK Maribor at home, drawing 1-1 to crash out.

It was something of a night of shocks, truth be told: Shamrock Rovers beat Partizan Belgrade 2-1 on their own patch, while Roma were dumped out by Slovan Bratislava. Shout outs also to Birmingham City and Stoke City, who hammered Nacional and FC Thun.
