Euro 2008 round up: Portugal, Croatia and Germany victorious
Euro 2008 got under on Saturday after a hilarious opening ceremony which resembled a bad New Order video. After that, a workmanlike Czech Republic beat dogged co-hosts Switzerland thanks to a goal by Sverkos in the 70th minute. The Swiss lost their captain Alex Frei in the first half and the Borussia Dortmund striker will miss the rest of the tournament.
Portugal beat Turkey 2-0 with man of the moment Cristiano Ronaldo showing flashes of why Real Madrid are willing to pay £78m for him. Deco worked tirelessly throughout and C-Ron had a hand in his side's goals. Turkey, with Boro's Tuncay up front, didn't look like they could offer much to the tournament.
Croatia beat Austria 1-0 thanks to a fourth minute penalty scored by Tottenham's new signing Luka Modric. But Slaven Bilic's were poor and in the end were lucky to pick up the three points. The fact that England were beaten twice by the Croats in qualification is another reminder of what a terrible job Steve Mc Claren did.
Favourites Germany recorded their first victory in the European Championships since Euro 96 beating Poland 2-0. Bayern Munich's Lukas Podolski scored the goals linking up well throughout with Mario Gomez and Miroslav Klose. Jens Lehmann looked like someone who hasn't played first team football in a long time and could be the team's weak link. Poland are still waiting for their ever first victory over their near neighbours.
