Ghana midfielder Michael Essien has signed a new five-year deal with Chelsea. The 25-year-old follows goalkeeper Petr Cech who also signed a new deal with the Blues which sees him contracted to the club until 2013.
Essien, who joined Chelsea from Lyon in 2005 for £24m, had already put pen to paper on a new contract last year. The improved deal will see the midfielder earn £80,000 per week illustrating Chelsea's determination to hold onto the Ghana star after rumours of interest from Inter Milan and Real Madrid.
New Blues boss Luiz Felipe Scolari has been glowing in his praise of Essien, hailing the African player as one of the best midfielders in the world. Essien will be hoping to nail down a starting role in Chelsea's midfield after spending much of the latter half of last season at right back.
