ESPN to launch new channel

ESPN will be launching a new channel to screen the Premier League matches it picked up following the demise of Setanta.

The American sport network won the rights to 46 live matches yesterday, and will be pushing its presence hard in the UK. It already has existing channels ESPN Classic and ESPN America running on SKY, and the new channel will be available on satellite, cable and Freeview, and they have signed a wholesale deal with SKY, which will offer its customers with the sports package for £10 a month.

'Buying the Premier League rights is a huge step and we are excited to use that as a platform to move into local live sport,' said Lynne Franks, the ESPN executive who broker the deal with the Premier League. 'Our intention is to launch an ESPN channel that will carry all the Premier League and also other sport.'
