Eriksson tried to bring Beckham to Leicester City

Sven Goran Eriksson has revealed that he made a bold attempt to bring erstwhile Manchester United and England midfielder David Beckham to Leicester City.

The Midlands club’s ambitious new owners will give the former England manager a war chest to sign new players in the January transfer window as they push for a play-offs place.

Beckham, who captained England during Eriksson’s five years in charge of the national side, was the first name on Leicester’s wish list but the player’s agent dismissed the offer.

Tottenham outcast Robbie Keane and Manchester City striker Roque Santa Cruz have also been linked with The Foxes, but Eriksson admitted that the club need to be in the Premier League to land the players that he wants.

‘The owners want a big signing. It is interesting the players that have been mentioned. I made phone calls to more or less all of them,’ Eriksson told Sky Sports.

‘Most of them, they don't really want to come to our league. If we get to the Premier League it will be much easier to get these players. But we are trying and the owners are happy to back me.’

‘If you talk about Beckham, of course I should take Beckham but I don't think he will go anywhere. I spoke to his agent to see if there was a small chance, but he said it was not possible.’
