English joy in Europe

Both Chelsea and Manchester United had winning starts to their Champions League campaigns, with Chelsea sitting at the top of their groups after the first round of games.

Chelsea beat Portuguese champions Porto 1-0 at Stamford Bridge thanks to Nicolas Anelka, who smashed home the rebound of his own missed one-on-one attempt, while United won 1-0 in Istanbul against Turkish champions Besiktas, with a Paul Scholes header enough to seal the points. The only sour note for Chelsea was John Terry being knocked unconscious in a collision with Bruno Alves in the eighth minute. However he played the rest of the game.

United are second in the group on goal difference however, as German Champs Wolfsburg thumped CSKA Moscow 3-1, with Brazilian striker Edinaldo Batista Grafite grabbing a hat-trick. Elsewhere two Fillipo Inzahgi goals gave AC Milan a 2-1 win in Marseille, Cristiano Ronaldo scored two in Real Madrid’s 5-2 win in Zurich, Bayern Munich walloped Maccabi Haifa 3-0 and Juventus only managed a 1-1 draw at home to Bordeaux.
