England launches World Cup bid

Football's coming home? Well it could be after England launched its bid to host the World Cup in either 2018 or 2022.

David Beckham was rolled out to chat with the ubiquitous Adrian Chiles in front of the onlooking Gordon Brown while that heavyweight of football Prince William gave a video message during the lavish ceremony.

The FA championed the quality of the venues on offer, English fans - which hopefully isn't tempting fate too much - while also stressing the fact that it's England's turn to host the biggest football tournament in the world, i.e. the old 'we invented football' argument.

Lord Triesman, the FA spokesman spoke to the press about the bid: "We in England would be truly honoured to host the World Cup and welcome the world. We have first-class grounds. We've got good transport links, domestically and internationally. We've got excellent accommodation." Shame about the weather, but you can't have everything.
