England beat Italy 36-11 at Twickenham

England beat Italy 36-11 at Twickenham in the opening game of the RBS 6 Nations, but Martin Johnson's team failed to convince despite the scoreline.

The decision of Italy coach Nick Mallet to play veteran flanker Mauro Bergamasco at number 9 backfired disastrously as England cruelly exposed the Stade Francais player's lack of experience at half-back.

Andy Goode took advantage of a Bergamasco error as early as the second minute to score a try and things got even worse for the Italian scrum-half as another misplaced pass let Riki Flutey dot down for his first try in an England shirt.

The returning Harry Ellis was England's stand out player scoring a try in either half, but his half-back partner Goode failed to impose himself on the game and will be under pressure to retain his place for the Wales match.
