England and Ghana play out thriller

England and Ghana played out a hugely entertaining match at Wembley last night, in front of a huge travelling army of Ghanaian fans.

England drew 1-1 with the Black Stars, and despite the fact they weren’t at full strength, the youngsters put on a good showing against the World Cup quarter-finalists, with Jack Wilshere, Ashley Young and Andy Carroll all impressing. Carroll scored England’s goal early in the first half with a smart finish, before Asamoah Gyan sent the Ghana supporters into raptures with an equally deft goal, in the dying minutes.

The one black mark on the game was the treatment dished out from some of Ghana’s support to Manchester United’s Danny Wellbeck, currently on load at Sunderland. Wellbeck has Ghanaian parents and has been courted by their national team, and many Ghana fans feel that Capello was trying to poach him from them by giving him a call up. (Wellbeck has represented England at every level so far. And in any case, as it was only a friendly he can still turn out for Ghana, should he so wish.)

‘Absolutely not,’ said Capello. ‘I work for England. I always select the best players for England. Yesterday, Aaron Lennon was injured. That is why I picked Welbeck.

‘I monitored him last year. He was an important player then. I went to see him three times but then he got injured. However, he is a really good player.

‘I am really happy because I saw a fantastic game. It was not a friendly game. Every tackle was a fight. The players did very well and the new players did very well. It is interesting for me to know the value of the players when they have a match at Wembley.’
