England 4 Bulgaria 0

England beat Bulgaria 4-0 at Wembley last night in the first match of their Euro 2012 qualifying campaign.

Man-of-the-match Jermain Defoe scored a hat-trick and Manchester City winger Adam Johnson bagged in first international goal in what was a convincing performance overall.

Although seven of the team hammered by Germany in Bloemfontein in June started against Bulgaria, Fabio Capello introduced some new blood with Joe Hart, Michael Dawson and Phil Jagielka making their competitive debuts with Theo Walcott restored to the right wing.

Hart again underlined that he is the best goalkeeper in England with a confident performance including a number of crucial saves just when it looked as if Bulgaria were going to get themselves back into the match.

Defoe had opened the scoring after just three minutes following some excellent build up play from Wayne Rooney and Ashley Cole.

England’s second goal came after the interval following Hart’s brilliant point-blank save from Martin Petrov. A flowing counterattack involving Gareth Barry, Steven Gerrard and Wayne Rooney finished with Defoe firing past Nikolay Mihaylov in the Bulgaria goal.

Adam Johnson added a third goal before Defoe completed his hat-trick four minutes from the end of normal time to cap what was a successful night at Wembley.
