Easy Peasy

Liverpool made it through to the last 16 of the Europa League after a 3-1 win over Unirea Urziceni in Bucharest, thanks to goals from Javier Mascherano, Ryan Babel and Steven Gerrard. Gerrard’s effort meant he has overtaken Alan Shearer as Britain’s top goal scorer in Europe, a stat tempered by the fact that Liverpool are in Europe every single year without fail, while Newcastle, well, weren’t.

‘It was a difficult game because of the pitch. We needed to be calm and do the job properly,’ said Rafael Benítez, whose team will now face French side Lille in the next round. ‘To play better we needed to score our goal as they were dangerous at set pieces.

‘I think once we scored a goal everything was easier. The second and third goals made things even better. Still we had some problems but the main thing was to score; we did it and we had more control of the game.’
