Defoe ruled out for eight weeks

England and Spurs striker Jermain Defoe could be out of action for up to eight weeks after damaging ankle ligaments in England's 3-1 win over Switzerland on Tuesday night.

Defoe scored a hat-trick in the 4-0 win over Bulgaria last Friday night and appeared to have finally nailed down a starting place in Fabio Capello’s starting XI alongside Wayne Rooney.

However, it now appears that the 27-year-old will miss England’s game against Montenegro next month as well as most of Tottenham’s Champions League group games.

The news will be a hammer blow to Spurs manager Harry Redknapp who has also lost Michael Dawson to injury. The centre-back was stretchered off with a twisted knee during the Bulgaria game.
