Jermain Defoe has admitted his frustration at fans and journalists constantly talking about the return of Michael Owen with the Spurs striker claiming that he is now the England's inform goalscorer.
The back pages are dominated with speculation over Owen's possible return to the England fold in the days running up to Fabio Capello naming his squad and Defoe has told reporters that the focus instead should be on the players who make the grade.
'It's like if my name gets mentioned Michael Owen's has got to get mentioned as well. That is sometimes frustrating. Michael Owen is a great player but it is not that if he is in the squad, I'm not. It would be nice to get away from it.'
The Spurs striker instead spoke about his great start to the season: 'It's been good. I've worked really hard in pre-season. I've done all my work in the gym. I've done the running and I felt sharp in the pre-season games.'
'I took it into the Holland game and it was great to come on and make an impact so early on. I'm just enjoying my football at the minute. The club are doing well, I'm playing with good players and I'm feeling really sharp.'
