Amid threats from terrorist organisations, the organisers of the Dakar rally have cancelled this year’s event. And they are moving the whole kit and caboodle to Argentina and Chile next year.
Every year for the last 30 years a super-charged caravan of trucks, bikes and cars has hurtled through the African deserts in the world’s craziest race. What a shame that it should have to move because of death threats.
Still, if you’re a motorsport fan and fancy a change, the 6,000km race is being staged in and around the stunning deserts of Argentina and Chile in 2009. We didn’t even know there was desert out there.
