Well, that didn’t last long. We only tipped the Dakar Rally as one of this month’s great sporting events on Wednesday, and now it’s been cancelled.
The Amaury Sport Organisation (ASO), which runs the rally, has said it had no choice after it received direct terrorist threats against the race itself and competitors. The race was due to start in Lisbon tomorrow – it hasn’t begun in Paris since 2000 – but recent tensions and attacks in Mauritania have forced the cancellation.
ASO insists that “the cancellation of the 2008 edition does not endanger the future of the Dakar". Let’s hope they’re right.
