Manchester City's chances of reaching the semi-finals of the UEFA Cup look to have evaporated last night with a 3-1 defeat to German side Hamburg. The Citizens were completely outclassed by their Bundesliga counterparts in another trademark lacklustre performance.
Despite going ahead after just 35-seconds through Stephen Ireland, City could have been on the end of a six goal hammering but for the heroics of Shay Given. The Irish goalkeeper pulled off a string of excellent saves to give his side a small glimmer of hope ahead of next week's return leg.
But Given could do little about the comical defending of his team-mates at set pieces. Joris Mathijsen equalized for Hamburg after some terrible marking from a corner before Micah Richards handled in the box to give away a needless penalty which Piotr Trochowski slotted home.
Substitute Jose Paolo Guerrero scored Hamburg's third 11 minutes from time leaving Mark Hughes and City with a mountain to climb if they have any chance of reaching the club's first semi-final since 1981.
