City crash out of the UEFA Cup

Manchester City crashed out of the UEFA Cup last night despite having beaten Hamburg 2-1 at Eastlands. The Bundesliga side progressed to the semi-finals 4-3 on aggregate having won the first leg 3-1.

Knowing that his team needed to start well and deny Hamburg a vital away goal, Mark Hughes looked on in horror as City conceded the opening goal on 11 minutes. Paolo Guerrero capitalised on some slack defending at the back to guide Jonathan Pitroipa's cross past Shay Given in the City goal.

But City were handed a lifeline when Piotr Trochowski was harshly judged to have handled a shot from Elano. The Brazilian stepped up to convert the spot kick and when Felipe Caicedo scored a brilliant second goal on 50 minutes it looked as if City were about to come back from the dead.

Elano twice hit the woodwork with free-kicks while Micah Richards and Stephen Ireland both wasted guilt edged chances to level the tie on aggregate. To make matters worse for City they had skipper Richard Dunne sent off 25 minutes from time for a second bookable offence.
