Cisse too expensive for Sunderland

Sunderland appear to have been hit by the credit crunch with chairman Niall Quinn hinting that the club won't be able to afford to sign French striker Djibril Cisse on a permanent deal.

The former Liverpool striker has scored 10 goals in 25 matched this season, but the departure of close friends Pascal Chimbonda and El Hadji Diouf during the January transfer could also spell the end of Cisse's time in a Sunderland shirt.

Quinn also cited the weakness of the pound in relation to the euro as another deciding factor in any potential deal for the French international: "I can't commit to him until we are safe – that's economically rather than football wise."
