Cink wins the Open at Turnberry

American Stewart Cink won his first ever major title when he beat veteran Tom Watson in a dramatic finish to the Open at Turnberry this afternoon.

Watson looked set to become the oldest winner of a major title 34 years since tasting his last Open victory, but the 59-year-old, needing just par, three putted on the 18th green to set up a four hole play-off with Cink.

The younger player was in no mood to give the romantics the win that they wanted and secured victory in the play-off by six shots. Watson, in contrast, appeared to tire and finished on four over par in an anti-climatic end to a brilliant display of links golf over the last four days.
