Chris Smalling stands up for David De Gea

Manchester United defender Chris Smalling has said that fans and journalists need to give their new goalkeeper David De Gea after his shaky start to the season.

The former Atletico Madrid man, who arrived at Old Trafford this summer, has had a ropey first two games for United, letting in weak goals against Manchester City and West Brom, but Smalling says that if he's given time, De Gea will prove to be an excellent goalkeeper.

'Some of the media has been a bit judgmental based on the first couple of games,' said Smalling. 'He has trained really well this week. You can see his agility and kicking. He will be a great goalkeeper for us.

'He has always performed well for Atletico Madrid and our manager has put a lot of faith in him. It's only a matter of time before the whole world sees what a good goalkeeper he is.'
