Cheltenham Festival preview

If you don’t know much about British horse-racing’s premier meeting – the Cheltenham Festival – here’s some factoids that will help put you in the know:
• it’s a four-day hurdle meeting, this year starting on Tuesday 11 March
• the climax of the meeting is the Cheltenham Gold Cup, run at 3.15pm on Friday 14 March
• some 500 horses run in 25 races across the four-day event
• total prize money tops £3million – with £450,000 at stake for the Cheltenham Gold Cup alone
• Tony McCoy is the most successful Cheltenham Festival jockey with 19 winning rides to date; Nicky Henderson is the most successful trainer with 31 winners
• most races are won by a brown horse, with brown horses coming in second and third usually (handy betting tip)
• all horse-racing is pretty dull to watch unless you put money on a horse (brown, usually)
