Chelsea through to Champions League semi-final
Chelsea are through to the semi-finals of the Champions League after a topsy-turvy 4-4 draw with Liverpool at Stamford Bridge. The Blues won 7-5 on aggregate in a match which will have tested the nerves of both sets of fans.
Having lost 3-1 at Anfield, Liverpool knew that they needed to hit the ground running and didn't disappoint their travelling support, taking a 2-0 lead early on thanks to a brilliant free-kick from Aurelio and an Alonso penalty. Chelsea looked shell shocked and just about made it to the half-time whistle without conceding another goal.
The Reds were still in the ascendency at the start of the second-half when Pepe Reina misjudged a Drogba shot to let Chelsea back into the tie. Just five minutes later Brazilian centre-back Alex produced a free-kick to match Aurelio's effort and level the score on the night.
When Frank Lampard put Chelsea ahead on 76 minutes it looked like game over for Liverpool with Benitez deciding to take off Mascherano and Torres. But Lucas and Dirk Kuyt had other ideas, scoring in quick succession to give the Reds a 4-3 lead with seven minutes to go.
Lampard finally broke Scouse hearts on 89 minutes with a clinical finish. Chelsea's reward for going through? A showdown with Barcelona at the Nou Camp.
