Chelsea in the race to sign Andrei Arshavin
It looks as if Chelsea are going to win the race to sign Russian midfielder Andrei Arshavin. Roman Abramovich is reported to be personally involved in the deal which would see the Zenit St Petersburg playmaker move to the London club for £12m.
Arshavin's stock rose after two outstanding displays at Euro 2008 and he had been linked with a possible move to Chelsea's rivals Arsenal. But the player has openly declared his desire to move to La Liga with Barcelona reported to be interested in signing the 27-year-old.
The bid from Chelsea could, however, see Arshavin plying his trade in the Premier League next year, with reports in the press suggesting that he is on his way to London to discuss personal terms. If the Russian international does join the Blues it will mean further speculation over Frank Lampard's future at the club.
