Chelsea could enter race for Nasri

Chelsea could make a bid for Arsenal midfielder Samir Nasri if they fail to sign Tottenham Hotspur playmaker Luka Modric , according to reports in a number of papers today.

Nasri, who joined Arsenal from Marseille back in 2008, has less than 12 months left on his current contract with the Gunners who have so far failed to convince the 24-year-old that his future lies at the Emirates.

Manchester United and Manchester City have both been linked with Nasri over the last few weeks and now it appears that the French international could also become a target for new Chelsea manager André Villas-Boas.

The former Porto manager will assess his squad when the players return for pre-season training next week although Chelsea have already had a £22 million bid for Modric rejected. If the Croatia international stays at Spurs, it is believed that Chelsea will switch their attention to Nasri.

Nasri himself is reported to be unsure about where his future lies. However, the French international knows that City, United and Chelsea could all pay more than the £90,000 a week offered by Arsenal.

Elsewhere, City look set to complete the signing of Arsenal and France left-back Gael Clichy early next week for a fee of £7 million. That move should allow Kieron Gibbs to establish himself as a first-team player in Arsene Wenger’s side in the coming season.
