Chelsea beat Manchester United to win Charity Shield
Peter Cech guided Chelsea to a 4-1 penalty shootout win over Manchester United in the Charity Shield this afternoon to hand Carlo Ancelotti his first trophy as Blues manager.
United had taken the lead with their first attack of the game on 10 minutes through winger Nani. The Portugal international gathered a pass from Darren Fletcher before beating Ivanovic and Michael Essien and firing past Cech from 25-yards.
But Chelsea were back on level terms on 52 minutes when Ricardo Carvalho capitalized on a moment of hesitation from Ben Foster in the United goal to head into the empty net. The Blues then took the lead in controversial circumstances.
Michael Ballack appeared to body check Patrice Evra leading to a Chelsea breakaway which Frank Lampard finished off with aplomb. Just when it looked like the Blues were about to win in normal time Wayne Rooney came up with a brilliant goal to take the game to a penalty shootout.
Ryan Giggs and Evra both missed their spot kicks leading to John Terry lifting the Charity Shield.
