Chelsea beat Liverpool 2-0

Chelsea beat title rivals Liverpool 2-0 yesterday at Stamford Bridge in what was a clinical and efficient performance. Nicolas Anelka and Florent Malouda got the goals but Didier Drogba again made the difference setting up both goals.

Liverpool struggled to control midfield despite the return of Javier Mascherano to partner Lucas in the middle of the park. Rafa Benitez's side struggled to create chances with the sale of Xabi Alonso to Real Madrid in the summer looking ever more foolish by the game.

The result sees Chelsea move two points clear at the top of the table and although they didn't set the world on fire there was no need for Blues boss Carlo Ancelotti to chastise his players as he had done following the lacklustre win over Apoel Nicosia in the Champions League during the week.

Liverpool have now dropped down to fifth place behind Arsenal and could also be leapfrogged by Manchester City later tonight if the Premier League's big spenders beat Aston Villa. Could the Reds be the team that drops out of the top fours this season?
