Chelsea beat Fulham on penalties

There was a whole host of Carling Cup football action last night, with three of the country's biggest boys in action. That includes Chelsea, who took part in an exciting west London derby with Fulham. OK, so it finished 0-0 after 120 minutes of football, but there was plenty of incident, and even a little bit of controversy to enrage Fulham's small-time support, who couldn't even sell 6,000 tickets for their cup final.

Chelsea won the game (yes, on penalties, when was the last time that happened, eh?) when Bryan Ruiz slapped his penalty against the crossbar. It crashed down onto the line, but Fulham's players were convinced that it had crossed over. There was a mini-kerfuffle, but in the end, justice prevailed and 10-man Chelsea, who had to deal with Alex's sending off early in the second half.

'I am very happy with the display,' said Chelsea manager André Villas-Boas. 'It was a super-human effort and very gratifying as Fulham just didn't lump it forward, and to be with 10 men for 70 minutes and to create the most and best chances is, for me, out of this world. I'm very, very happy with the display of everybody, commitment-wise, effort-wise, concentration-wise.'
