Chelsea and Liverpool enjoy Champions League wins
Just when wives and girlfriends thought it was safe to go back into the sitting room! Yes, you've guessed it, the Champions League got back underway last night. It was business as usual for Chelsea who hammered Bordeaux at home while Liverpool struggled to overcome Marseille at the Stade Velodrome.
Joe Cole and Frank Lampard were both on the score sheet in the first half last night, punishing Laurent Blanc's team with a headed goal a piece. It wasn't vintage Chelsea, but the Blues didn't need to break a sweat to bury the French side. Florent Malouda and Nicolas Anelka put some gloss on the result with two late goals.
Liverpool again were left to rely on a Roy of the Rovers style performance from captain Steven Gerrard after a lacklustre performance against Marseille. The French side took the lead through Lorik Cana, but Gerrard equalised two minutes later with a brilliant strike from 25-yards out.
Ryan Babel impressed in a defensive looking Liverpool lineup which featured the returning Fernando Torres as a loan striker. The Dutch winger won a penalty which Gerrard duly dispatched to make it 2-1. But the Reds took their foot off the gas and were lucky to get the three points in the end.
