Chelsea 6 West Brom 0

Chelsea started the new Premier League season with an emphatic 6-0 victory over newly promoted West Bromwich Albion at Stamford Bridge.

After an injury blighted World Cup, Didier Drogba bagged himself a hat-trick, Florent Malouda scored a brace and Frank Lampard also netted his first of the season in what turned out to be an easy victory for Carlo Ancelotti’s team.

Malouda opened the scoring in the sixth minute tapping in from close range after Scott Carson failed to hold a Drogba free-kick.

West Brom’s defensive frailties were exposed again after the break when Drogba fired a free-kick through the wall and past Carson's despairing dive.

The Ivory Coast striker made it 3-0 just a few minutes later from close range after West Brom failed to clear a corner. Chelsea were in cruise control after that and Lampard got in on the act finishing off some neat build-up play from Nicolas Anelka and Ashley Cole.

Drogba claimed the match ball on 68 minutes when his shot from the edge of the area deflected off a West Brom defender and past a wrong-footed Carson before Malouda completed the rout in the 90th minute.
