Chelsea 2-1 West Bromich Albion

Chelsea took their first three points of the new season yesterday evening after they beat a stylish and determined West Bromich Albion.

The Blues won 2-1 thanks to two second half goals from Nicolas Anelka and Florent Malouda, but it was far from an easy match for Andres Villas-Boas' side: the Baggies took an early first-half lead through Shane Long and could easily had added to it subsequently, and for most of the first half they easily swatted aside Chelsea's attacks. However the Londoners eventually came good, and Villas-Boas was happy with the way they fought back.

'Their mental attitude for the second half was good,' he said afterwards. 'There was a sense of realising the space and better options without being anxious like they were in the first half. It goes down to them.

'It was a difficult game. The first goal was very early and the crowd became anxious and that passed onto the pitch. We had to remove the anxiety and be mentally tranquil. The players were able to free themselves from that and work at their best.'
