Chelsea 1 Apoel Nicosia 0

Chelsea recorded an unimpressive 1-0 win over Apoel Nicosia in Cyprus thanks to a Nicolas Anelka goal in the first-half time.

The Blues were looking to bounce back from their 3-1 defeat to Wigan in the Premier League on Saturday but produced another below par performance against the Cypriot champions.

However, the victory saw Chelsea remain their 100 per cent record in Champions League Group D despite the lacklustre nature of the performance.

Apoel Nicosia started well in what was their first home Champions League game, passing the ball with confidence in the opening period of the game. However, Chelsea soon took control of midfield as the home struggled to hold onto possession.

Anelka fired the Blues ahead on 18 minutes when he converted a Juliano Belletti cross following a darting run from the Brazilian. Despite dominating the rest of the half Chelsea were unable to convert their superiority into more goals.

Savvas Poursaitides went close to equalizing for Apoel on 64 minutes but Petr Cech pulled off a brilliant save to deny the midfielder. Chelsea endured a nervy last 20 minutes as they looked to maintain their slender lead.

Carlo Ancelotti looked visibly perturbed on the sidelines as he watched his star studded team misfire once again. The Blues take on Liverpool at Stamford Bridge at the weekend with both teams desperate for three points as they look to keep the pressure up on league leaders Manchester United.
